News Iowa's Senator Harkin Easily Defeats Reed Posted 5 November 2008 Sen. Tom Harkin is the first Iowa Democrat to win a fifth term in the U.S. Senate. Harkin, who turns 69 on Nov. 19, easily defeated Republican challenger Christopher Reed, 36, of Marion.   Harkin was first elected to public office in 1974 and has been a member of the U.S. Senate since 1984.
