Seminar on
Engineering Careers Nov. 5
Posted 3 November 2008
Northeast Iowa Community College,
in partnership with Oelwein Community Schools, will host a free
community seminar at the newly constructed Regional Academy for Math
and Science (RAMS) Center this Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The seminar, titled "The Demand for Engineers in America and Northeast
Iowa," highlights how this skilled worker shortage is affecting area
industries and the local economy.
A panel of engineers and educators will share what skills are needed,
and how the job market offers opportunities for engineers at companies
such as Rockwell Collins, John Deere and others. The event is free,
open to the public and
designed for all ages, especially students.
Panelists for the evening include Dr. Cliff Chancey, UNI physics
professor; Jamie Pirillo, an engineer employed at John Deere; and
NICC's Dr. Brian Fay, a science instructor who teaches at the RAMS
Center. Other panelists are yet to be determined.
NICC staff will share current data to help illustrate the shortage of
engineers in the U.S., and how the RAMS Center will play a pivotal role
in math and science education to alleviate the shortage.
Oelwein High School administrators will also explain a new program
implemented called Project Lead the Way, which provides high school
students with courses that introduce them to the engineering field.
The overall goal of the panelist and educator discussions is to bring
more students into science, technology, engineering and mathematics
fields, also termed STEM fields.
"This free seminar gives the community an opportunity to learn more
about STEM fields and their impact on the workforce of Northeast Iowa,"
stated Dr. Penny Wills, NICC president.
The RAMS Center was created with funding from state,
federal and local sources and is intended to serve students and
community members in Oelwein and surrounding school districts.
The center, located on 1400 Technology Drive in Oelwein, officially
opened at the start of NICC's fall semester on Aug. 21.
