Fire
Departments to Host Safety House
Posted 21 October 2008
As part of an ongoing fire
prevention program, the Guttenberg Fire Department, along with the
Garnavillo and Garber Fire Departments, will again be hosting the Blank
Children’s Hospital Fire Safety House this Friday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m.
until 12 noon at the Guttenberg Fire Station, 210 Pearl Street, in
Guttenberg.
This program is extremely helpful in presenting fire safety training to
first and fourth grade children in this area. Local fire departments
believes the program helps establish a base training in our first
graders and then reinforces and reminds them in fourth grade.
Firefighters will be on hand to assist and answer any questions. Fire
kills more Americans than all natural disasters combined. Nationally,
there are millions of fires, thousands of deaths, tens of thousands of
injuries and billions of dollar loss.
In 2006, fire departments responded to 412,500 home fires in the United
States, which claimed the lives of 2,580 people (not including fire
fighters) and injured another 12,925, not including fire fighters.
Estimated loss in home fires during 2005 was nearly $7 million.
One third of residential fires start in the kitchen, with cooking -
specifically frying - as the primary cause. Kitchen fires are the
leading cause of injury in a residential fire, accounting for one third
of home fire injuries. Smoking is the leading cause of death in
residential fires. Eighty percent of smoking-related fire fatalities
result from fires originating in upholstered furniture, mattresses or
bedding, or clothing.
An unequal number of fire deaths occurs among young children; age nine
or younger. Often, children do not learn proper fire safety behavior
such as dropping and rolling on the ground if clothing ignites, and
crawling instead of running out of a house. Education is a powerful
tool to help prevent the death of children in fires.

Children’s Hospital website and view information about the Fire Safety
House.
