New State Dairy Princess from West Union
Posted 14 August 2008
Judges last week named Katie
Steinlage of West Union as the new Iowa Dairy Princess for 2008-2009.
Steinlage, 18, is the daughter of Gary Steinlage of West Union and Mary
Steinlage of Eldorado. She was one of 10 participants in the dairy
princess competition.
Leah Henkes of Luana was crowned the alternate dairy princess. She is
the daughter of Trent and Leslie Henkes and represented Clayton County.
Candidates were judged on communication skills, personality, knowledge
of the dairy industry and enthusiasm for dairy promotion.
While at the fair, Steinlage also showed three of her dairy cattle,
taking first-place honors with a summer yearling and earning third
place with a senior heifer calf and a senior 2-year-old.
The Iowa Division of the Midwest Dairy Association sponsors the
princess contest. As state dairy princess, Steinlage will be a advocate
for the dairy industry and the association. She will make speaking
appearances and attend other promotional activities across the state
during the next 12 months.
Steinlage graduated from North Fayette High School in May and will
attend Northeast Iowa Community College. She plans on majoring in dairy
science and pre-veterinary science and will specialize in animal
reproduction and embryo transfer.
Steinlage replaces Jessica Tekippe of Manchester, the 2007-08 Iowa
Dairy Princess.
