Fire Destroys Home Near Elkader
Posted 13 August 2008
The Elkader Volunteer Fire
Department was called to a house fire at the Tim Hansel home, 19205
Chicken Ridge Road near Elkader shortly before 9 p.m. Monday night,
Aug. 11.
Fire department officials say Hansel was working with some
combustibles, attempting to fill a lighter, when some of the lighter
fluid spilled and it ignited on him. Hansel reportedly was not injured
in the incident and was the only one home at the time of the initial
blaze.
Firefighters responded and managed to save the home, having contained
the fire to the living room and kitchen areas. They were on the scene
for just under control three hours.
By around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, Aug. 12, the house had reignited
and firefighters were again called to the residence. The second fire
completely destroyed the Hansel home with damages totaling $150,000.
