Northern Engraving Layoffs Begin
Posted 11 August 2008
Last Friday, Aug. 8, 67 workers in
Allamakee County were in the first wave of employees to be laid off
from Northern Engraving in Waukon.
The second largest employer in Waukon, Northern Engraving, will now
begin plans to systematically close its doors in the Allamakee County
town, until all 207 workers are without jobs. The company expects to
close the doors on the local plant for good in November of this year.
Northern Engraving is based in Wisconsin and makes decorative products
for cars and electronics.
Some employees point to the nation's bad economy and outsourcing as why
the company was forced to downsize. They say the factory has endured
other times of economic downturn, with temporary layoffs, but then
workers were called back to work. Many continue to be shocked by the
closure.
Some of the workers at the Waukon plant have been at the factory since
it first opened in 1969. That puts them at 39 years of service and just
short of retirement.
