UNI to Expand 2+2 Program Due to Grant
Posted 11 August 2008
The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded $430,348 to the UNI College of Education through the Fund for the Improvement of Education Awards Program.  The grant will be used to help UNI expand its 2+2 teacher education program to students statewide.

The teacher education program, which is already established in the Carroll, Ankeny and Boone, is for students who have family priorities or fixed job schedules that don't allow them to enroll in a traditional college program.

Students take two years of classes at their local community colleges to earn their associate degree and then the equivalent of two years of UNI courses taught by UNI faculty at a community college or through distance education classes.

With the help of the federal grant, the program will be looking to expand in Sioux City, Keokuk, Muscatine, Clinton, Dubuque, Peosta, Calmar, Ottumwa and Mason City. The university hopes to have between 25 and 35 new students ready to begin the program by the spring 2009 semester. Overall, UNI expects the program to serve between 70 and 80 students when the new class begins this spring.
