Meskwaki Powwow Going on this Weekend
Posted 8 August 2008
The Meskwaki, a Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa, will hold in their annual Powwow event this weekend near Tama. Due to this year's flooding at their traditional village site along the Iowa River, the ceremony will be held at an arena near the Meskwaki Bingo-Casino-Hotel.

This year's event marks the 94th year for the traditional Native American gathering. Derived from the Green Corn Dance, an ancient ritual held during the harvest, the local powwow became more of a social gathering for tribe members to meet before heading out to their winter residences.

The four-day cultural festival will feature unique ceremonial dances, authentic native arts and crafts, historical preservation exhibits, colorful native regalia, artisan demonstrations and field day events and contests. Food vendors will available throughout the weekend.

The event began yesterday and continues today, Friday, Aug. 8, through Sunday, Aug. 10. Events kick off each day at 12:30 p.m. with various dances and games featured throughout the weekend.
