Agriprocessors Accused of Violating Child Labor Laws
Posted 6 August 2008
The Iowa Labor Commissioner's Office is continuing to investigate nearly 60 child labor law and general wage violations at Postville's Agriprocessors plant.

The office yesterday, Tuesday, Aug. 5, announced in it's multi-month investigation of the kosher meatpacking facility, it has uncovered 57 cases with multiple employment violations, including:

minors working in prohibited occupations;
exceeding allowable hours to work youth;
failure to obtain work permits;
exposure of youth to hazardous chemicals; and
youth working with prohibited tools.
Iowa law prohibits children under 18 years of age from working in meatpacking plants.

Allegations of the child labor violations were included in an initial affidavit and a search warrant that led to the May 12 immigration raid in which authorities arrested 389 Agriprocessor employees. Officials said the state's investigation into the child labor violations began before the federal raid and was conducted independently.

The case has been turned over to the Iowa Attorney General's Office for further investigation and revue of the allegations.
