ACLU Questions Postville Workers' Legal Representation
Posted 2 August 2008
Members of the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU) is questioning a packet of documents given to
attorneys for workers who were arrested during the recent
Agriprocessors immigration raid.
What concerns ACLU members the most is that the documents included
scripts for defense lawyers, which the
organization says shows a disregard for due process and proof that the
U.S. Attorney's office put pressure on workers to quickly plead guilty.
The ACLU obtained the documents from public defenders in Iowa.
Trials for the workers, who were among the 389 employees arrested May
12, were quickly held at the Cattle Congress Fairgrounds in Waterloo
with most of those charged pleading guilty within the first week.
