Somalis Taking Vacant Agriprocessor jobs
Posted 31 July 2008
A moderate number of Somali
immigrants are replacing Hispanic workers, many of whom were arrested
in a huge immigration raid on May 12, at Postville's Agriprocessor
kosher meatpacking plant.
Before the raid, hundreds of Mexican and Guatemalan immigrants lived
and worked in Postville.
A multicultural community of 2,200 people located in Northeast Iowa is
now welcoming immigrants from Somalia who are looking for jobs with
better working and living conditions.
Postville's recent cultural transformation began back in the 1990's
when Agriprocessor jobs attracted eastern Europeans. Immigrants from
Bosnia, Poland, Russia and former Soviet Republics descended upon the
town and some still reside there today.
Over the past 10 years, a large Hispanic population settled in the
community and started working at the local meatpacking plant.
Somali immigrants who obtain employment and relocate, will also be
added into the rich mix of cultures residing in Postville. The result
is that the city is now home to people from 24 nationalities speaking
17 languages.
