Race America Crosses Iowa
Posted 28 July 2008
Young runners involved with Race
America run for personal fitness and to raise awareness about their
desire to build a recreational facility in Elgin.
Through their travels they have covered the full range of weather and
the country's geography. This year, on Race America's 10th anniversary,
teenagers will run through all of Iowa's 99 counties.
The runners started crisscrossing Iowa earlier this week in Burlington
and expect to cover 1,850 miles before they're done.
Past runs took Race America runners to Louisiana; Thunder Bay, Ontario;
Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Washington, D.C.; and even Alaska.
Runners are divided into teams traveling with an escort vehicle, and
this year they joined the Ragbrai route. The 11-day trek will end
Friday, Aug. 1, near Elgin.
During their run, participants accept donations to benefit construction
of the Centre, a facility proposed on property between Valley High
School and Elgin.
Lowell Lyngaas, the track and cross country coach at Valley High
School, says no money designated for the Centre is ever used to pay for
the race.
The young runners camp or stay in homes of families they know along the
route. They have also slept and showered in schools.

America or track the runners, visit the Web site at www.raceamerica.org.
